Michael C. McPartlon, Chairman of the Board, Names Stephen B. Hanse, Esq. as President and CEO of NYSHFA/NYSCAL Effective January 1, 2017

On behalf of the Board of Directors of NYSHFA/NYSCAL, I am pleased to announce that Stephen B. Hanse has been named to succeed Richard J. Herrick as President and CEO of NYSHFA/NYSCAL effective January 1, 2017.

“Stephen is a proven leader for skilled nursing and assisted living providers throughout New York,” said Michael C. McPartlon, NYSHFA/NYSCAL Board Chair. “His knowledge, experience and commitment to protecting and advancing the interests of our members and the residents we serve will ensure that providers are able to meet the challenges of New York’s ever evolving healthcare landscape well into the future,” continued McPartlon.

Mr. Hanse who currently serves as the Vice President of Governmental Affairs and Counsel of NYSHFA/NYSCAL will succeed Richard J. Herrick who has been President and CEO of NYSHFA/NYSCAL for the past fourteen years and will retire the end of December.  Mr. Herrick said, “Given the dynamic nature of healthcare in New York, NYSHFA/NYSCAL is fortunate to have an experienced leader and association professional in Stephen. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to work together with Stephen over the past four years. He has continually ensured that the concerns of providers and their residents are recognized and addressed and our members will be well served with Stephen as President and CEO. I look forward to supporting Stephen and all of our members during this transition in leadership.”

Prior to joining NYSHFA/NYSCAL in 2013, Mr. Hanse was with the law firm of Featherstonhaugh, Wiley & Clyne in Albany for 8 years where he represented healthcare organizations, healthcare providers and professionals, and Fortune 500 companies before New York’s Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches of government.

Mr. Hanse previously served as Vice President of the Energy Association of New York State. Earlier in his career, Stephen served in several policy positions in the New York State Senate and the New York State Assembly.

Mr. Hanse is active in the American Health Care Association, the New York State Bar Association, the Board of the Albany Law School Government Law Center and the Board of the Albany Law Elder Law and Special Needs Subcommittee. Mr. Hanse is admitted to the Bar in New York State, the United States District Court for the Northern District, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Among other things, Mr. Hanse serves as a Trustee for the Village of Coxsackie, Attorney Coach for the Coxsackie-Athens High School Mock Trial Team and a Coach for Henry Hudson Youth Soccer. Stephen is married to Maureen Hanse and together they have four boys.
